Monarch butterfly

Are monarch butterflies becoming extinct?

The monarch population has dropped by an estimated 80 percent over the past 15 years.” Scientists fear the species will become extinct within the next 20 years, according to a study published in 2017 in the journal, Biological Conservation. (https://monarchjointventure.org)

What can I do to help?

Start by planting milkweed and nectar plants that are native to your area. Garden organically to minimize your impacts on monarchs, their food plants and other pollinators. ( https://www.onegreenplanet.org )

Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on milkweed plants

Once the eggs hatch, the monarch larva eats the leaves of milkweed. This is the only plant that they can eat.
